Photo by @gerdludwig. Previously known for its #beautiful landscape and pleasant #climate, the troubles in #Crimea started to percolate a year ago. A story published in National Geographic Magazine saw the writing on the wall years in advance.
At 1,234m, Ai-Petri is not the highest mountain in Crimea. But it's certainly one of the most spectacular, with its sparkling white limestone peak and its jagged "teeth." @natgeocreative @thephotosociety @theimagereview #ukraine #russia #mountain #landscape #travel #nature #view

Officially the last image in our Narwhal series. Get ready for our next species in these postings of my favorite polar species both on here and @paulnicklen. I could not believe this moment. Regardless of the rarity of the situation or species, as a photographer/artist, I see the world in shapes and patterns. Here we were, turning hard in our little ultralight airplane 500 feet above these unicorns of the sea, and all of sudden they broke into this perfect star pattern during a dance of 10 foot long ivory swords. I just smiled and kept clicking half in awe and half in disbelief. This image never made the @natgeo magazine article but it remains as one of my favorite moments during the Narwhal shoot. What is important to realize is that as sea ice disappears from the Arctic, the Northwest Passage is going to become the Panama Canal of the North with massive ship traffic and the risk for oil and mineral exploration. These ships will travel through the migratory corridors of narwhals, bowhead whales, beluga whales and seals. All of these species are incredibly sensitive to noise. I once saw a 2HP electric boat motor clear an entire bay of Bowhead Whales. Ships will displace these marine mammals from their feeding grounds and travel corridors. These Narwhal images seem to have resonated with the good people following my IG page and that of @natgeo. Soon, I will continue with images of my other favorite polar species but while we are on the topic of Narwhals, here is another of my favorites. We should not have been in this location with all of these Narwhals however, my good friend and ace pilot, Brian Knutsen was able to masterfully land my small ultralight airplane on a floating pan of sea ice. Any other mode of transportation would have been impossible and a helicopter would have scared them away with the loud rotor noise. Once we landed and turned off the engine, all we could hear were blows for miles. We stood just a few feet away from these Narwhals who were gently wielding their tusks away from one another as they desperately maneuvered for a breath of air. They were diving under the sea ice in order to feed on polar cod. The sea ice travels around in the current and the breathing hole locations are always changing. What I want people to realize is that with the disappearance of sea ice in the near future, we will also see the demise of copepods, amphipods, polar cod, seals, polar bears, bowhead whales, belugas and even Narwhals. As we continue to release carbon emissions into the atmosphere at this rate, we will never be able to reverse the effects of human induced climate change. Let's alter our behavior and our impact on this planet before we wake up one day without these fantastic and charismatic species. Please follow us on @sea_legacy and sealegacy.org as we use the power of photography and filmmaking to inspire the change necessary to protect the last great wilderness species and ecosystems. #Repost from @world_wildlife: First video evidence of wild Amur #tigers in #china! The footage was captured almost twenty miles from the Russian border late last year. In the past, #tiger footprints were the only indicators of Amur tigers in China. The distance from the Russian border is significant, as the cubs would not have been able to travel so far on their own. From their location, we know they were raised in china. #nature #wildlife.
How is everyone doing tonight? First I want to apologize for not being able to reply back to any of your comments and emails but I have been so busy with school and work plus I got my hands burned at work today with some chemicals :/. But here is a delicious smoothie: semi frozen watermelon and blueberries, so delicious :) (it may not be proper food combining but it was delicious).
One of the most unique, special and elusive species I have ever had the pleasure of photographing is the Narwhal. Most people do not realize that they even exist. There really are unicorns out there! The tusk just happens to grow out of a 16 foot long whale that lives in the Arctic ocean. It doesn’t get any better than that. It took me ten years of trying different techniques to find these whales. Working with local Inuit guides and using my ultralight airplane with friend and fellow pilot, Brian Knutsen we were able to find hundreds of these whales living way offshore in the drifting pack ice. #nature #wildlife @Elplanetaphoto #unicorn @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #climatechange

And liftoff for @NOAA’s new deep space solar monitoring satellite! A new mission to monitor solar activity is now making its way to an orbit one million miles from Earth. The Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 6:03 p.m. EST Wednesday from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
DSCOVR, a partnership among the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), NASA and the U.S. Air Force, will provide NOAA space weather forecasters more reliable measurements of solar wind conditions, improving their ability to monitor potentially harmful solar activity.
